Booth and Collins in Final 16 of Oceanside Surfing Event

Jeff Booth of Laguna Beach and Richie Collins of Costa Mesa advanced to the fifth day of the Stubbies Pro International Surfing Tournament Friday at the Oceanside Pier.
Booth, Collins and 14 other surfers will compete in the sixth round today, beginning at 7 a.m., with the quarterfinals to follow at 2 p.m. The semifinals and finals will be held Sunday.
Booth will face 19th-seeded Sonny Garcia today, and Collins will go up against two-time world champion Tom Carroll of Australia.
In Friday’s competition, Booth defeated Gary Elkerton, and Collins defeated Hans Hedemann.
Also advancing were two-time world champion Tom Curren of Santa Barbara and the current world champion and No. 1-seeded surfer, Damien Hardman of Australia.
In the women’s draw, the defending world and Stubbies pro champion, Wendy Botha, now of Australia, and a three-time world champion, Freida Zamba of Florida, advanced.
Women’s competition today begins at 11 a.m.
