Reagan Supports Cyprus Talks

WASHINGTON — President Reagan met for 30 minutes today with Cypriot President George Vassiliou and reaffirmed U.S. support for U.N.-sponsored talks between Greek and Turkish leaders for reunification of Cyprus.

White House spokesman Marlin Fitzwater told reporters Reagan endorsed the talks under the guidance of U.N. Secretary General Javier de Cuellar. He also said “the President has always advocated removal of foreign forces” from Cyprus but that “negotiations should be under the United Nations.” Turkey has said it will remove its troops from Cyprus once its concerns for the safety of the Turkish Cypriot population are satisfied.
