COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. — In the teams’ first appearance at Cooperstown since 1971, the Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians played to a nine-inning, 1-1 tie Monday in the annual Hall of Fame exhibition game at Abner Doubleday Field.
Before the game, several Hall members were introduced, including Willie Stargell, who on Sunday became the 200th inductee.
Ryne Sandberg hit a home run to give the Cubs a 1-0 first-inning lead. The Indians tied the score against reliever Frank DiPino in the eighth on Willie Upshaw’s run-scoring single.
In 1971, the Indians had defeated the Cubs, 13-5, in a game in which Hall of Famer Ernie Banks, who retired later that year, hit a home run for Chicago.
