The condom market is leveling off after heavy growth spurred by fear of AIDS, and the nation’s two biggest manufacturers hope to maintain consumer interest by targeting female buyers, according to industry officials. Carter-Wallace Inc. of New York and Schmid Laboratories of Little Falls, N.J. plan soon to release products in feminine-style packaging that they hope will encourage more women to buy the prophylactics. Women account for an estimated 40% of condom purchases, industry experts say.
