Backers of a proposed ballot initiative that would require future Orange County jails to be located in Santa Ana have until Monday to turn in petitions that would qualify the measure for a 1990 countywide vote.
The petition drive followed the Board of Supervisors’ vote in July, 1987, to build a 6,000-bed jail in Gypsum Canyon, adjacent to Anaheim Hills. Sponsors of the drive, Taxpayers for a Centralized Jail, need 66,200 signatures to place the initiative on the ballot. The group has already missed two deadlines for putting the measure on the ballot this year.
