The turbulence of the California Aqueduct thwarted Fresno County sheriff’s deputies seeking the body of a 6-year-old drowning victim, so the search was called off because of potential danger to divers. “The water is just too dirty, too fast and too deep,” one diver, Deputy Paul Kalpakoff, said. “You can’t see anything from the top. Even with the (underwater) search lights, visibility is only six inches.” The boy, visiting from Queens, N.Y., fell into the canal while fishing with family members. His name was not released. Teresida Palma, 37, of Lemoore Naval Air Station, also drowned when she jumped into the water to try to rescue the boy.
