Johnny Gray Runs Fastest 800 of Year

Johnny Gray of the Santa Monica Track Club won the 800 meters in 1:43.10, the best time in the world this year, in an international track and field meet Sunday at Hengelo, Netherlands.
The United States 400-meter relay team, anchored by Carl Lewis, posted its fastest time of the season to win the event in 38.64. The team of Michael Marsh, Mark Witherspoon, Joe DeLoach and Lewis topped its previous best, set last week at Sestriere, Italy, by two-hundredths of a second.
Willie Banks, holder of the world record in the triple jump, won at 55-2.
Mary Slaney won the 1,000 meters in 2:34.65, finishing well ahead of the competition.
