Tennis Roundup : After Month’s Layoff, Navratilova Returns With Easy Win at Montreal

Martina Navratilova gained an easy victory in her first tournament match since Wimbledon, defeating Susan Mascarin Tuesday in the $315,000 Players’ Challenge Canadian Open at Montreal.

Top-seeded Navratilova, ranked No. 2 in the world, eliminated Mascarin of Boca Raton, Fla., 6-2, 6-2, in the second round. Navratilova, who lost the Wimbledon final last July to No. 1-ranked Steffi Graf, advanced to the third round.

Second-seeded Pam Shriver downed Eva Krapl of Switzerland, 6-4, 6-2, and ninth-seeded Zina Garrison of defeated Gisele Miro of Brazil, 6-1, 6-2.

Second-seeded Mats Wilander and third-seeded Jimmy Connors advanced Tuesday to the second round in the $602,500 Assn. of Tennis Professionals Championship at Mason, Ohio, but three other seeded players were upset.

Wilander defeated Andrew Castle 6-3, 6-1 and Connors beat Dan Cassidy 6-4, 6-1 on center court at the Jack Nicklaus Sports Center.

Earlier, fifth-seeded Miloslav Mecir was beaten 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) by Joey Rive of Ft. Lauderdale. Seventh-seeded Guillermo Perez-Roldan of Argentina was eliminated 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) by Carl Limberger of Australia.

Michael Chang of Placentia defeated eighth-seeded Jonas Svensson of Sweden 6-2, 7-5. Chang is ranked 66th in the world, while Svensson is ranked 15th.
