Local News in Brief : Shell to Pay $66,900 Over Air Pollution

In a settlement negotiated with federal environmental officials, Shell Oil has agreed to pay $66,900 for sulfur dioxide pollution emitted by its refinery in Carson last April.
The settlement, filed in U.S. District Court, comes in a case that is unusual because Shell knew it was going to violate federal air quality standards beforehand and approached environmental officials to work out an agreement, according to Lucia Blakeslee, assistant regional counsel for the Environmental Protection Agency.
“EPA was very pleased,” Blakeslee said, “that Shell was willing to come to us with their dilemma and work it out and come to a very sound environmental result.”
