RUIDOSO DOWNS, N.M. — Dash For Speed outpaced four challengers by three-quarters of a length Sunday to win the $550,000 All American Derby and become the first filly to win all three derbys at the Ruidoso Downs racetrack.
The filly covered the 440 yards over a muddy surface in 21.44 seconds, just .11 off Ronas Ryon’s 1987 record in the race for 3-year-old quarter horses.
Dash For Speed is only the second horse to win all three of the season’s derbys--the Kansas, Rainbow and All American. My Easy Credit won all three in 1977.
Second place was a photo-finish among four horses, but Meddlin Dash came out ahead of third-place finisher Elans Special, a filly who won last year’s All American Futurity for 2-year-old quarter horses.
Dash For Speed earned $235,482 with her win for Blakeman Farms, Bob Blakeman and Thomas Badbury of Ft. Worth, Tex.
Meddlin Dash, sired by Dash For Cash as was Dash For Speed, earned $98,294 for the estate of B.F. Phillips of Frisco, Tex.
