Pontiff Clears Way for Nun’s Beatification

United Press International

Pope John Paul II gave his final approval today to a decree that clears the way for the beatification of a Philadelphia nun who gave up a $20-million fortune and is credited with a “miracle” in the curing of a deaf boy in 1974.

Beatification is the next-to-last step toward sainthood in the Roman Catholic Church. Cardinals and bishops gave church recognition to the miracle attributed to Mother Katharine Drexel, who died March 3, 1955, at age 96, but to become effective their decision had to obtain final approval of the Pope.
