Rialto’s Burton Romps to 12-Stroke Victory in Junior Golf Invitational

Brandy Burton of Rialto, a 17-year-old who won the National PGA Junior Championship last month, scorched the tough Wood Ranch Country Club course with rounds of 71 and 70 to win the girls’ division of the Wood Ranch Junior Invitational.
Her 36-hole score of 141 was 3-under-par and bettered the top boy’s score by nine strokes. Burton played from the women’s tees at a course distance of 5,417 yards. The boys played from the blue tees at 6,500 yards. The tournament concluded Tuesday.
Burton’s nearest competitor in the girls’ 16-17 age group was Stephanie Martin of Camarillo, who shot rounds of 73 and 80 for a 153 total, 12 strokes off the pace. Heidi Voorhees of North Hollywood was third at 154.
In the boys’ 16-17 age group, Steve Cardarelli of Burbank finished first with rounds of 75 and 80 for a 155 total. Shawn Chew of Port Hueneme was second at 159, followed by Corby Segal of Burbank at 160, Brendan O’Shaughnessy of Westlake Village (162) and Jason Gordon of Woodland Hills (163).
Dino Stephens of Los Angeles won in the boys’ 14-15 age group with rounds of 73 and 77 for a total of 150 and also won the overall boys’ championship. Shane O’Brien of Valencia was second in the age group at 157.
In the girls’ 14-15 age group, Leann Wong of Los Angeles won with a 156 total. Lisa Kiggens of Bakersfield was second at 158.
Chad Wright of Simi Valley, who plays out of Wood Ranch, won the boys’ 12-and-under age group with a score of 164, followed by Brian Rea of Huntington Beach at 178. Ben Garner of El Toro won the boys’ 11-and-under, 18-hole tournament with a score of 79. Darren Angel of Simi Valley was second with an 86. In the girls’ 11-and-under division, Allison Wilson of North Hollywood won with a score of 110.
