Vietnam War Foes and Quayle’s Serving in the National Guard

Del Olmo’s column clearly focuses on the issue of Quayle’s service in the National Guard.

The issue is not the importance of the Guard as the Bush-Quayle campaign tries to portray in a transparently disingenuous defense of Quayle’s actions. Rather it is the willingness to stand up for what you believe. Quayle has always been strongly in favor of fighting communism wherever it appeared. He had the chance to stand up for his beliefs by volunteering for service in Vietnam or a willingness to submit himself to the draft. Instead he chose to avoid placing himself in the dangers and inconvenience of serving his country in the active services. There are many ways to describe his behavior, none of them complimentary.
