SPOTLIGHT: DOHENY STATE BEACH

Location: Dana Point Harbor Drive and Coast Highway, Dana Point.
Description: The 62-acre site includes a wide, sandy beach used for fishing, swimming and surfing, and a rocky intertidal area at the north end. San Juan Creek enters the ocean at Doheny State Beach, and the creek mouth supports a variety of wildlife. The intertidal and nearshore areas constitute the Doheny Marine Life Refuge.
Facilities: The state beach offers a campground with 115 sites, fire rings, tables, drinking water and a trailer sanitation station. The day-use area has a five-acre lawn with picnic tables, group picnic areas, fire rings, food and supply concessions, changing rooms and wheelchair-accessible restrooms. The San Juan Creek Bike Trail, which runs along the west side of the creek, and the equestrian trail along the east side begin just north of Doheny State Beach and continue north along the beach.
Hours: Day-use hours are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Fees: Day-use fees are $4. Camping fees are $12 per night (reservations required).
