District Judge Bars Claiborne From U.S. Courts

LAS VEGAS — Former U.S. District Judge Harry Claiborne has been barred from practicing law in federal court because of his conviction for tax evasion.
U.S. District Judge Robert Broomfield ruled Thursday that allowing Claiborne to represent clients could weaken public confidence in the judicial system.
The ruling allows Claiborne, the first federal judge removed by Congress through impeachment in 50 years, to reapply for admission to the federal Bar in a year and does not prevent him from practicing law in Nevada state courts.
Claiborne, 72, has been suspended from practicing in federal court since his 1984 conviction, which landed him in prison for 17 months and prompted his removal from the bench by Congress.
