PEKIN, Ill. — Republican presidential nominee George Bush had another slip of the tongue Friday, saying that Star Wars posed no harm to weapons when he meant it posed no risk to people.
“I’m strongly for SDI. It’s a noble concept. It doesn’t put weapons at risk,” he told a crowd attending the Marigold Festival here.
The Reagan Administration says Star Wars, formally known as the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), is a purely defensive system and has no offensive use. Hence, the statement that it poses no risk to people.
It was the second slip for Bush during the Labor Day week, which formally kicked off the fall campaign.
On Wednesday, the vice president told an American Legion convention in Louisville that Sept. 7 was the 47th anniversary of the invasion of Pearl Harbor, which actually accured on Dec. 7, 1941.
