Charges of Abusing Kin Filed Against Molester

A 64-year-old Canyon Country man was charged Monday with sexually molesting two young relatives during the time he was on trial for molesting a girl who lived near his home.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Janice L. Maurizi filed five counts of child molestation against Everett Herman Colegrove in a case involving two female relatives, now 14 and 10.

Maurizi alleges that the two girls were molested on separate occasions while Colegrove was out of jail on bail while standing trial for similar charges against a neighbor.

A San Fernando Superior Court jury in March, 1987, convicted him of one felony count of child molestation and one misdemeanor count of child molestation in a case that involved more than three years of abuse that began when the girl was 11, Maurizi said. Colegrove was sentenced to a year in County Jail for those offenses.

By April, 1988, Colegrove had completed his jail term and returned to his Canyon Country trailer park home where he resumed molesting the two relatives, Maurizi said.

Colegrove is charged with molesting them on several occasions from June, 1985, through May, 1988.

Maurizi said Colegrove would invite the girls to his house, separately, and offer them a chance to make some pocket money by doing odd jobs and chores. He would also invite them over to watch MTV, she said.

The older girl is expected to testify that Colegrove fondled her, forced her to orally copulate him and showed her pornographic movies, according to court records. Colegrove also allegedly threatened the girl by saying she would never see her mother or sister again if she told anyone about the incidents, Maurizi said.

The younger girl told authorities that the abuse began when she was about 6 years old and was left alone with Colegrove to watch television, court records said. He warned her that if she told anyone about it, he would be sent to jail and that her family would be angry with her, court documents said.

“The children were intimidated into not saying anything for a period of several years,” court documents said.

Last August, while the girls were visiting family members in Iowa, they reported the crimes to a local sheriff’s office, who alerted the district attorney’s office in Los Angeles, Maurizi said.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Colegrove, who is believed to have fled the state, Maurizi said.
