Federated Department Stores and Allied Stores, the two retailing units of Campeau Corp., disclosed big second-quarter losses in filings with the SEC. For the period ended July 31, Federated lost $100 million on sales of $970.5 million. The company’s recent acquisition by Campeau, accounting changes and sales of divisions render year-to-year comparisons meaningless, the company noted. Allied said it lost $107 million in the second quarter on sales of $627 million. The results include a $10-million charge on the sale of Brooks Bros., for which Allied had previously recorded a gain that was larger than it got, and a $17-million charge representing an indirect share of Federated’s loss.
