CAMPAIGN ’88 : Bush Makes Up Ground

Bush has closed a 16-percentage-point gap and is now running neck-and-neck in his battle with Dukakis to win California voters, according to a new poll.
The California Poll released on Thursday showed that Dukakis’ 52% to 36% lead over Bush in late July had been reduced to 46% to 45%, a tie within the poll’s 4% margin of error.
The new poll shows Dukakis leading in Northern California and among women voters and minorities. Bush is ahead in Southern California and among men and non-Latino white voters.
“It’s a phenomenal reversal. I’ve never seen anything like it,” poll director Mervin Field said.
The poll was based on telephone interviews with 674 registered voters and was conducted between Sept. 6 and Sept. 12.
