Ventura 20, Newbury Park 16--Chris Thomas caught two fourth-quarter touchdown passes from Tim Albrent, the second with only 20 seconds remaining, to give Ventura a comeback victory at Newbury Park.
Newbury Park led, 16-13, with 1:30 left when Ventura took over at its 11 and scampered 89 yards in 3 plays to pull out the victory. Albrent connected with Thomas on a 75-yard pass play to the Panthers’ 14. Two plays later, Albrent hit Thomas with the game-winning, 8-yard pass.
Both teams’ offenses, with key players missing, failed to score in the first half. Newbury Park quarterback Wayne Cook broke his thumb during practice earlier this week and did not suit up. Ventura running back Chris Lambert also missed the game because of a broken left leg suffered during practice earlier this week.
