GREENWOOD, S.C. — A gunman entered an elementary school today and opened fire, killing one pupil, wounding 10 other people and sending terrified youngsters fleeing into the woods, authorities said.
Police said they have the 19-year-old suspect in custody. School custodian Thad Barr said the man fired shots in the school lunchroom, then went down the hall shooting into classrooms. Physical education aide Phillip Browning, who subdued the gunman, said that after the suspect quit shooting, he threw the pistol down and walked out of the building as if nothing had happened. Eight children and two teachers were taken to the hospital for gunshot injuries, including a child who was in critical condition.
