Tennis Roundup : McEnroe Sweeps Past Leconte After Being Penalized a Point

John McEnroe, playing fired-up tennis after a penalty point cost him a game, downed third-seeded Henri Leconte, 7-5, 6-1, Tuesday at the Paris Open in France.

McEnroe was penalized first for slamming the ball in disgust and hitting a water bottle with his racket on the changeover after Leconte had broken serve to cut McEnroe’s first-set lead to 5-4.

In the next game, McEnroe kicked through a sign when Leconte hit a winner to gain the advantage after a deuce. The subsequent penalty point gave Leconte the game to tie it, 5-5.

But McEnroe channeled his anger and took eight of the next nine games to win the match.

In other first-round matches, second-seeded Tim Mayotte defeated Frenchmen Thierry Champion, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1, and Eric Winogradsky of France, the lowest-ranked player in the tournament, upset Martin Jaite of Argentina, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6. Winogradsky is ranked 258th, Jaite 42nd.

Top-seeded Steffi Graf of West Germany needed just 45 minutes to advance to the second round of the $250,000 Midland Group Championships at Brighton, England.

Budarova, ranked 98th in the world, never troubled the Graf serve despite going for outright winners almost with every shot.

No. 2 Pam Shriver beat Monique Javer of Britain, 6-4, 6-0.

Qualifier Niklas Kulti, one of Sweden’s top junior players, upset top-seeded Patrick Kuhnen of West Germany, 7-5, 7-5, in the first round of the $75,000 Bergen Open at Bergen, Norway.
