Movin Brown Jug overcame the far outside post position to win Friday night’s $19,000 Katella Handicap at Los Alamitos Race Course with the fastest 870-yard clocking of the fall quarter horse season.
Making his first appearance against older horses, Movin Brown Jug went off at 14-1 odds. Jockey James Lackey rocketed to an early lead aboard the gelding and held a 1 1/2-length advantage on eight rivals as the field headed into the far turn midway through the sprint.
Lackey’s mount drove to the wire to win by 2 1/2 lengths with a final time of 44.67 seconds--a little more than a quarter of a second off the track record of 44.41 set 2 years ago by Calyx.
Movin Brown Jug, trained by Charles Treece, returned $30, $11 and $5.60. The resulting exacta payoff with 9-1 runner-up Brents Charger paid $213.20. Henry Turk, the owner of Movin Brown Jug, won $11,125.
Brents Charger was second throughout and returned $8.60 and $5.60.
What Lucks Gay Chic was third, paying $7.
Running Concept finished fourth, followed by Naturally Ours, Bonshinner, 2-1 favorite Im A Sunset First and Daylight Avenger.
In the co-feature, Ruidoso Downs Derby Triple Crown winner Dash For Speed won by a length over five allowance rivals, covering the 350-yard course in 17.45, just off the track record of 17.28 established by Send The Gals Candy last May.
