The American public almost unanimously, 91% to 8%, supports a federal law requiring a seven-day waiting period before a handgun could be purchased, the Gallup poll has found. The proposal would enable authorities to determine whether prospective buyers were convicted felons or mentally ill. Overwhelming support for this restriction is found in all major population groups, including handgun owners (87%); opposition does not exceed 13% in any group. An amendment mandating the seven-day gun-purchase restriction was dropped from the omnibus anti-drug bill passed in the 100th Congress’ final days, after strong opposition from the National Rifle Assn.
