Dubcek Leaves Czechoslovakia 1st Time in 18 Years

VIENNA — Former Czechoslovak Premier Alexander Dubcek, whose short-lived Prague Spring reforms were crushed by a Soviet-led invasion in 1968, left Czechoslovakia today on his first foreign trip in 18 years, his wife said.
Dubcek, 66, will receive an honorary political science degree from Bologna University in Italy on Sunday.
Dubcek was quoted on Thursday as saying he was worried about whether he would be able to return home after his Italian trip. He told the Italian news agency ANSA that his fears “are very understandable, given my present position and the public expression of opinions that do not conform to official views.”
