The Nation : Nearly 400 Abortion Protesters Arrested
- Share via
Nearly 400 anti-abortion activists were arrested during demonstrations nationwide at abortion clinics and doctors’ offices. About 125 were arrested in Buffalo, N.Y.; 167 in Hartford, Conn., and 100 in Birmingham, Ala. Fifty-seven of the Connecticut protesters who refused to give their names were sent to the state prison. Most of the demonstrators were supporters of Operation Rescue, which held protests in about two dozen cities on Oct. 30. Those demonstrations were linked to a continuing abortion protest in Atlanta that began when the Democratic National Convention was held there in July and has resulted in about 1,200 arrests. In Buffalo, the protesters were charged with trespassing after they blocked entrances at the office of a gynecologist who performs abortions. In Hartford, about 250 demonstrators marched outside the Hartford Gynecological Center clutching rosary beads, chanting prayers and carrying signs proclaiming: “Abortion: Dial A for Murder” and “Give the Unborn a Chance.” Four buses were used to remove them to jail.
