The Philippines is suing Westinghouse Electric Corp. for unspecified punitive damages over a $2.1-billion nuclear plant that Manila said is too dangerous to operate, the government announced. President Corazon Aquino announced that the government had filed suit in New Jersey, charging Westinghouse with bribing former President Ferdinand Marcos to win the contract. The lawsuit seeks damages of up to triple the value of the contract. The suit also charges Westinghouse with negligence in designing and building the plant, as well as in supervising costs and quality. A Westinghouse spokesman in Pittsburgh said the company believes that arbitration will prevail in the dispute.
