THE DALLES, Ore. — The ranch that belonged to Indian guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh and his 3,000 followers was sold at auction Friday to an insurance company for $4.5 million.
About 10 Rajneesh followers handed out fresh flowers and copies of the guru’s books to about 200 spectators at the sale.
Connecticut General Life Insurance Co. was the only bidder for the 64,000-acre property of the so-called “rich man’s” guru, whose commune disbanded in 1985 amid charges that disciples had committed immigration fraud, as well as poisonings, arson, attempted murder and electronic spying.
The Rajneesh Investment Corp. had asked $28 million for the land.
