Grade-school children who are members of the San Diego Police Department Safety Patrol will be awarded a total of $6,000 in scholarships by Police Chief Bob Burgreen today at San Diego State University, police announced Friday.
The 13 fifth- and sixth-graders to receive these awards are among 2,700 patrol members. According to police, there has not been one fatality at school crosswalks while students were on duty during the 53 years since the group has been in existence.
The scholarship money was donated by San Diego bank, insurance and police organizations.
Burgreen will present the awards at 1 p.m. at the Aztec Bowl.
