LATANA, Fla. — The National Enquirer and another tabloid, Weekly World News, will be put up for sale promptly in keeping with a suggestion in the trust of the late Generoso Pope Jr., trustees for the estate said today.
Pope, who pioneered the gossipy, celebrity-oriented style that made the Enquirer a market leader in the field of supermarket tabloids, died Oct. 2 of a heart attack. He was 61.
The trustees offered few details about the pending sale of GP Group Inc., the company that owns the two tabloids. In a statement released by the company, the trustees said the timing and the method of the sale would be announced later.
The Wall Street Journal reported that potential buyers for the Enquirer include Robert Maxwell, the British printing and publishing tycoon, and Mike Rosenbloom, a Canadian investor who owns several rival publications, including the Globe, the National Examiner and Sun.
