Perez de Cuellar Asks Lebanon Unity

BEIRUT — U.N. Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar on Tuesday urged Lebanon’s feuding factions to reconcile their differences.
The independent An Nahar newspaper quoted Perez de Cuellar as saying in an interview in Paris: “Lebanon should be reconciled . . . then it can start solving the problems that come from the outside.
“It is almost impossible to find a solution to the problems of Lebanon without strong international pressure to help the Lebanese solve their problems themselves,” he said.
Lebanon has no president, two rival governments, a divided army, a toothless Parliament, is partly occupied by the Israeli army and is powerless to halt fighting between various guerrilla groups.
