NEU ULM, West Germany — The U.S. Army on Thursday removed nine more Pershing 2 nuclear missiles from a base here, the third batch to be withdrawn from West Germany under the superpower treaty signed a year ago.
The missiles, under the control of the U.S. Army’s 56th Field Artillery Brigade, were loaded onto army trucks that departed Wiley Barracks in Neu Ulm, 180 miles southeast of Frankfurt, in two convoys.
U.S. Army spokesman Maj. Jerry Hart said one convoy, carrying first- and second-stage rocket motors and radar and guidance systems, was going to the United States where the motors will be destroyed.
The missile components to be flown to the United States were packed in large metal containers, he said.
