Nation : TV to Carry Superpower Messages
WASHINGTON — President Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev will exchange New Year’s greetings in the form of televised messages to the people of the United States and the Soviet Union, the White House said today.
“The President has taped a greeting for that purpose, and we are working out the details with the Soviets at this time, so I anticipate that that will happen,” White House spokesman Marlin Fitzwater said. This will be the third such exchange of messages between the two superpower leaders, a practice that grew out of the 1985 Geneva summit.
