Roundup : Esperanza Stays Unbeaten, Wins Tournament Title

Lynn Murray and Michelle Ruollo scored 2 goals each to lead Esperanza High School to 4-1 victory over Temple City in the championship of the 32-team Cerritos girls’ soccer tournament Monday at Gahr High School.
Temple City took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Maria Gellagos but Murray scored twice and Ruollo once in the first half to put Esperanza ahead.
Tymerie Busser had 7 saves for Esperanza (10-0). Murray was voted the most valuable player of the tournament and defender Sherrie Buenter was voted to the first team.
In Angelus League girls’ soccer:
Rosary 8, St. Paul 0--Karen Miltenburger, Kristin Furlong, Cam Stevens, Alison Brennan, Maria Villapondo, Shannon Kenney, Amy Polnaszek and Jennifer Schulte scored for host Rosary (3-2-1, 1-0).
In the Bosco Tech boys’ soccer tournament:
San Clemente 1, Alhambra 1--San Clemente lost to Alhambra on penalty kicks, 2-1, in the first round. John Handal scored for San Clemente. In the first round of consolation, San Clemente defeated Salesian High School, 3-2. Adrian McSorley, Kevin Crean and Todd Daniels scored for San Clemente (7-1-2), which faces El Monte Wednesday at 8 a.m. in the second round of consolation.
In the Simi Valley boys’ soccer tournament:
Agoura 1, Fountain Valley 0--Mike Sorenson scored for Agoura in the second-round match. Fountain Valley (6-2) plays Oxnard at 9:30 p.m. today in the consolation round.
Fountain Valley 1, Channel Islands 0--Mike Cope scored for Fountain Valley in the opening round. Joey Penaflor had 3 saves in the first half and Kyle Thomas 4 in the second half for Fountain Valley.
In nonleague boys’ soccer:
La Habra 1, Anaheim 0--Jamie Hutcherson scored midway through the first half to lead visiting La Habra. The Highlanders improved to 4-3-1; Anaheim is 3-3-1.
In the Fullerton boys’ basketball tournament:
Servite 74, Sonora 41--Chris Johnson scored a game-high 16 points to lead Servite in the first round. Jaimie Rosenkranz added 12 and Steve Marusich 10 for Servite, which plays Western in the second round Wednesday at 8 p.m. Sonora plays Buena Park in the consolation round Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Western 81, Buena Park 20--Joe Romero scored 12 points and Matt Schroeder 11 for Western (5-1) in the first round. Western led, 40-13, at the half.
In the San Dieguito boys’ basketball tournament:
San Dieguito 41, Newport Harbor 37--Chris Lee and Scott Gray scored 12 points each for Newport Harbor in the consolation round.
In the Carson City Capital boys’ basketball tournament:
El Toro 70, Hug (Nev.) 42--Greg Reynolds scored a game-high 18 points and Khari Johnson added 13 and Matt Thompson 11 for El Toro (2-4).
In nonleague boys’ basketball:
Mater Dei 65, Merimac 48--Dylan Rigdon scored 14 of his team-high 18 in the fourth quarter to lead Mater Dei (9-1) at home. David Boyle was the only other Mater Dei player in double figures with 12.
Sunny Hills 60, Ontario 48--Walter Mitter scored 16 points and Brett Mitchelson 15 to lead host Sunny Hills (5-2). Jeff White scored 13 for Sunny Hills.
In the Santa Barbara girls’ basketball tournament:
Healdsburg 50, Fountain Valley 33--Stacy Hisaka scored 12 points for Fountain Valley in the first round.
