Carl Peterson Named Chiefs’ General Manager

Carl Peterson, a former general manager of the Philadelphia Eagles, was named president and general manager of the Kansas City Chiefs Monday.
There has been speculation that Peterson will try to lure Dick Vermeil, a former Eagle coach, and current ABC-TV commentator, out of retirement to replace Coach Frank Gansz, whose 2-year record of 8-21-1 contributed to the firing of General Manager Jim Schaaf and the resignation of longtime president Jack Steadman Dec. 8.
Peterson, 45, who signed a 4-year contract to rebuild the Chiefs, has an extensive football background. He was an assistant under Vermeil at UCLA from 1973-75, became director of player personnel for the Eagles in 1977 and helped turn them into a Super Bowl team in 1980.
As president and general manager of the Philadelphia/Baltimore Stars, he put together the United States Football League’s most successful franchise. The Stars played in all three USFL championship games and won the final two.
