College Basketball Roundup : Roe’s Shots Help Syracuse Beat Rutgers

Undefeated Syracuse had its problems for the opening 16 minutes of Tuesday night’s 100-81 victory over Rutgers, a team trying to rebuild from 7-22 season.

Syracuse made 6 dunks and 4 layups but only 2 jump shots fell in the first 16 minutes, keeping Rutgers (4-3) close and a sellout crowd at Piscataway, N.J., in the game.

But Matt Roe ignited and capped a 14-4 run in the final 4:08 of the first half with 3-point baskets to give the Orangemen a 45-30 lead.

The Orangemen, who have won 12 straight, didn’t allow Rutgers to get closer than 13 points in giving Jim Boeheim his 299th career coaching victory.

Ohio St. 93, Florida 68--Jay Burson scored 37 points, including a school-record 9 3-point shots, and the No. 15 Buckeyes beat the Gators in the first round of the ECAC Holiday tournament at New York.

Burson’s 9 3-pointers broke Dennis Hopson’s single-game mark of 5, set in 1987, and beat the team record of 8 in 1 game. The Buckeyes (8-2) finished with 11 3-pointers. Florida is 1-5.

North Carolina St. 95, Monmouth (N.J.) 50--Sophomore guard Rodney Monroe scored 24 of his career-high 31 points in the first half at Raleigh, N.C., and the Wolfpack (5-1) had little trouble with the Hawks (4-3).

Stanford 65, St. Mary’s 64--Al Lewis missed a shot just before the buzzer as the Cardinal (6-3) escaped with a victory over the Gaels (9-1) at Moraga, Calif.
