Zelko Obradovic, a member of Yugoslavia’s national basketball team that won the silver medal at the 1988 Olympics, has been arrested for draft evasion, the state-run press reported in Belgrade.
Obradovic, 27, who plays guard for Partizan Belgrade and was one of Yugoslavia’s best Olympic players, was arrested by military authorities after submitting a fake medical certificate that would have exempted him from the compulsory 11-month military service in the Yugoslav army.
He was detained along with an army psychiatrist, who was alleged to have provided the document, which stated Obradovic had “psychological problems” resulting from a previous 6-month jail term. Obradovic was involved in an automobile accident that killed a man, the Politika Ekspres daily said.
Obradovic could face a prison term of 3 years if convicted by a military court.
