In Brief : Israeli Team to Play in Moscow

JERUSALEM — The Israeli basketball team Maccabi Tel Aviv flew to the Soviet Union today to play its first game in Moscow since the Kremlin severed diplomatic relations with Israel in 1967.
Close to 200 fans who wanted to accompany Maccabi Tel Aviv to Moscow were refused entry visas by the Soviet authorities.
Maccabi will compete against CSKA Moscow in a European champions cup game on Jan. 12.
The Soviet Union agreed last month to let Israeli basketball teams play in Moscow and to send Soviet teams to Israel. For the last 21 years, the countries’ teams have played on neutral courts in Western Europe.
The Soviet move comes amid improving ties between Israel and the Soviet Union.
