West Germany announced it has charged a Polish-born West German resident with spying for Poland for nearly 40 years. Charges against Jerzy Edward Romanowski, 64, say he first agreed to spy for Poland in 1948, received intelligence training in 1952 and slipped into West Germany in 1953. Romanowski, arrested last July and awaiting trial in Hamburg, is accused of passing on information about military bases and emergency landing sites. He is also accused of passing on sketches of roads, canals, bridges and gas stations.
