The Los Angeles City Council has voted to pay $100,000 in an out-of-court settlement to the daughter of a South-Central Los Angeles man who died last January after he was confronted by five Los Angeles police officers outside his home. According to police reports, a neighbor had telephoned authorities to complain of being assaulted by William McCall, 40. When officers arrived, McCall allegedly became belligerent and was suspected of being on PCP.
Officers said they used a supposedly non-lethal, electronic Taser gun to subdue McCall, who stopped breathing after being placed in the back seat of a patrol car. The Los Angeles County coroner’s office concluded after an autopsy that McCall had died of “blunt force trauma to the neck” and ruled his death a homicide, according to attorney Steve Yagman.
