An Annual Football Season Opener at Anaheim Stadium Is Approved

SAN FRANCISCO — A proposal to establish a season-opening college football game each year at Anaheim Stadium was approved Wednesday by the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. at its convention.
The first Disneyland Pigskin Classic will be played in August 1990, said Tom Starr, executive director of the Freedom Bowl.
Schools will be allowed to play in the game not more than once every 5 years and each of the country’s 7 major conferences must be represented once every 7 years. The same guidelines are followed by the Kickoff Classic, which is played each August at East Rutherford, N.J.
The major beneficiary of both games is a retirement trust fund for the American Football Coaches Assn.
