The government of Sri Lanka’s President Ranasinghe Premadasa released 234 political prisoners who were held without trial under emergency regulations that ended this week, officials said. The day before, Premadasa ordered an end to the state of emergency imposed in 1983 to confront a rebellion in the north and east by Hindu Tamils fighting for independence. Officials said about 1,500 political prisoners will soon be freed under the new regulations.
