Robyn Camarillo scored a goal and helped set up another to lead the Mater Dei High School girls’ soccer team to a 3-0 Angelus League victory over previously undefeated Bishop Amat Friday at Mater Dei.
Mater Dei (12-4-2 overall, 4-1-1 in league play), which entered the game ranked third among Southern Section 3-A teams, took a 1-0 lead with 7 minutes gone on Saule Sadunas’ penalty kick after Camarillo was tripped by a defender while advancing the ball in the Lancer penalty area.
The Monarchs, whose defenders stopped two first-half Bishop Amat (10-1-3, 2-1) scoring chances after Mater Dei goalie Michelle Lodyga fell down in front of her net, controlled the ball for most of the second half.
Bishop Amat was ranked second in the Southern Section 3-A going into the match.
“The girls are starting to really jell as a team and are beginning to play with the energy and intensity that have characterized Mater Dei soccer,” said Marty Breen, Mater Dei coach. “The pressure that Robyn has created in the opponents’ penalty area has been very vital for us, and it was vital in setting up our first goal today.”
Camarillo gave Mater Dei a 2-0 lead after 6 minutes in the second half when a low kick by Diana Anadauah deflected off Lancer goalie Jennifer Coleman to an unguarded Camarillo, who kicked the ball into the open net.
Carla Cichocki scored the Monarchs’ third goal after a Mater Dei corner kick caused a scramble in front of the Lancer goal. Cichocki took control of the loose ball and scored on a low, bouncing kick.
