ROSEMONT, Ill. — Loyola Marymount takes a break from West Coast Athletic Conference action to play DePaul today in a nationally televised game at the Rosemont Horizon at 11 a.m., PST.
The teams played here 3 weeks ago in a holiday tournament with Loyola losing a well-played game, 115-111. Hank Gathers scored 32 points, and Jeff Fryer had 30, but Gathers was in foul trouble and had to back off on defense, allowing DePaul’s Stan Brundy to score a career-high 47 points, mostly on uncontested layups.
Loyola (8-5) will be playing its third game in 4 days and has won 6 of its last 7. DePaul is 9-7, but nearly all of its losses have been to top-20 teams.
In National Collegiate Athletic Assn. statistics released this week, Gathers leads the nation in both scoring, with an average of 34.9 points a game, and rebounding, at 15.1 a game. DePaul Coach Joey Meyer has recently shuffled his lineup, inserting 7-foot James Hamby as a starter.
