TEX & SEX: Local hard-rock trio the Chemical People desperately wanted some attention for their new album, “So Sexist!” So the band (favorite hobby: attending X-rated video conventions) put one of their pals--porno star Jeanna Fine--on their album cover (wearing--well, almost wearing one of the band’s T-shirts). The album, which features such songs as “Human Fear,” “Donut Run” and “Submarine Dream, is available on Long Beach-based Cruz Records. . . . The spotlight is on the Lone Star State this month. This Thursday Big Brother & the Holding Co. are reuniting for a benefit concert at the Port Arthur Divic Center to mark the 45th anniversary of Janis Joplin’s birth. (Proceeds go to the city’s historical society’s musical heritage exhibit.) Coming Feb. 3: the Fabulous Thunderbirds will honor the 30th anniversary of the Big Bopper, Buddy Holly and Richie Valens plane crash with a benefit concert in Beaumont, which will offer the unveiling of a Big Bopper statue made by his son, J. P. Richardson III. . . . If you want to see a Texas honky-tonk hero in your own back yard, stop at the Palomino Saturday night, which will offer Joe Ely as a headliner. Ely’s such a hotshot back home that the Texas Highway Department nabbed him to star in its current 60-second anti-littering TV spots, called “Don’t Mess With Texas.” Previous spokespersons for the public service campaign have included guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan, the Fabulous T-Birds and Dallas Cowboys lineman Ed (Too Tall) Jones. . . . And Band Name of the Week goes to the Couch Sluts, who’ll be at the Whisky Monday night.
