MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY

Today marks the celebration of Martin Luther King Day. The 60th anniversary of his birth was Sunday.

Closed: All government offices, courts, banks, schools, libraries and post offices.

Open: Stock and commodity exchanges and most businesses. RTD buses will follow daily schedules.

The Martin Luther King Memorial Golf Tournament to benefit the Southern Christian Leadership Conference begins at 7 a.m. at the Rio Hondo Golf Course in Downey.

Volunteers will go door to door asking for donations for the third annual King Day drive for food and clothing for the homeless. Volunteers will gather at 10:30 a.m. at Holman Methodist Church, 3320 W. Adams Blvd.; Bethel Lutheran Church, 700 E. 70th St., Long Beach, and the Church in Ocean Park, 235 Hill St., Santa Monica.

The fourth annual Kingdom Day Parade begins at 11 a.m. The route travels east along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, beginning at Crenshaw Boulevard and ending at Exposition Park with a 1 p.m. rally.

Anti-apartheid student march and rally. It starts at 11 a.m. at the site of the former South African Consulate, 9107 Wilshire Blvd., and ends at consulate’s current site, 510 N. La Cienega Blvd.

Mayor Tom Bradley will address an ecumenical tribute at noon. Greater Cornerstone Baptist Church, 5946 S. Figueroa St., Los Angeles.

Student organizations of the Claremont Colleges will sponsor a commemorative ceremony at noon in the McKenna Auditorium on the Claremont McKenna College campus in Claremont.

The New CalArts Twentieth Century Players will perform two original pieces at a musical tribute to King at 12:10 p.m. Transamerica Center Auditorium, 1149 S. Hill St., Los Angeles.

The Crosstown Project, a program aimed at encouraging black students to attend college, will sponsor a performance at 2 p.m. of “The Ultimate Triumph of Brotherhood of Love,” at Whittier College. Ettinger Faculty/Alumni Center, 13406 Philadelphia St., Whittier

Lutherans from throughout the greater Los Angeles area will meet for the eighth annual worship celebration and Holy Communion service commemorating the life of King at 3:30 p.m., Stouffer Concourse, 5400 W. Century Blvd.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson will be the keynote speaker at the 12th annual King birthday celebration, presented by the Martin Luther King Legacy Assn. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, 6:30 p.m. Westin Bonaventure, 404 S. Figueroa St., Los Angeles.

The San Fernando Valley Interfaith Commemoration of King’s birthday begins at 7:30 p.m. at Valley Beth Shalom Temple, 15739 Ventura Blvd., Encino.
