One truck driver was killed and a second was seriously injured in a three-vehicle smashup Monday on the Pomona Freeway in the City of Industry, snarling traffic in the San Gabriel Valley for hours, officials said.
The driver and passenger of the car that was the third vehicle in the collision escaped injury, California Highway Patrol Officer Lyle Whitten said.
The accident occurred about 9:45 a.m. just east of the San Gabriel River Freeway when a tractor-trailer was changing lanes along the eastbound Pomona Freeway and clipped the left rear of the car, sending it out of control and into the center divider, Whitten said.
The truck driver swerved and was sideswiped by another tractor-trailer, which careened out of control and ran up over the top of the center divider.
The names of the people involved in the accident were not immediately released.
Four of the five eastbound lanes were closed until about 1 p.m., severely backing up traffic on the Pomona and San Gabriel River freeways.
