Kool Arrival led all the way to win the $82,650 La Centinela Stakes for 3-year-old fillies in stakes-record time Wednesday at Santa Anita, her second straight stakes victory with jockey Laffit Pincay Jr.
Kool Arrival, favorite of the crowd of 15,516, beat 35-1 shot April Mon by 2 3/4 lengths. She covered the mile in 1:36, cutting three-fifths of a second off the record set last year by Winning Colors, who went on to win the Santa Anita Derby and Kentucky Derby.
Kool Arrival paid $5, $3.80 and $2.80. In her most recent race, she won the $125,000 filly division of the California Breeders’ Champion Stakes on Jan. 4.
April Mon, ridden by Alex Solis, paid $20.80 and $7.20. Love and Affection, with Russell Baze aboard, was another half-length back and paid $4.20.
The La Centinela is limited to fillies who have not won at a mile or more in a race worth $50,000 to the winner.
Solid Eight, originally coupled with Love and Affection, and Excellent Lady were scratched.
