50% Pay Raise for Federal Officials

In response to “Reagan Backs 50% Raise for U.S. Officials,” Part I, Jan. 6:
President Reagan is giving the taxpayers a going-away present. He has approved a recommendation by the presidential commission for a 50% pay increase for top federal officials, judges and members of Congress. This must be his last attempt to balance the budget, by adding $300 million a year to come out of taxpayers’ pockets.
Private industry and Social Security recipients generally receive a meager cost-of-living increase, but this special group needs a 50% increase because they can’t get along on their existing salaries.
We no longer have a government of the people, by the people and for the people. We have a government of politicians, by politicians and for politicians. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. We need a change.
