Green Shoots 63 for Phoenix Open Lead; 9 Are Unable to Finish Due to Darkness

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Ken Green completed an 8-under-par round of 63 Thursday, moments before darkness halted play in the first round of the $700,000 Phoenix Open golf tournament.
Green, a two-time winner last year, held a 1-stroke lead, with 9 players halted by darkness on the TPC course.
They are scheduled to return early this morning to complete first-round play. The second round will be played today as scheduled. Of those left on the course, none appeared to have a chance to finish among the leaders.
“An unusual day for me,” Green said. “I had 4 tap-ins and 3 no-brainers.”
Three of those tap-ins, after approach shots had left him birdie putts of less than 1 foot, came on the 15th, 16th and 17th holes.
He also ran in a 50-foot putt for an eagle 3 on the 13th.
Scott Hoch, Mark McCumber and Ted Schulz shot 64s in the near-perfect conditions.
